Yes, that is backwards. However, the wedding is traditionally thought of as the bride's day. Your fiancee obviously cares about you enough to want to go through a ceremony that you will remember and cherish for the rest of your life. If he wants to do the wedding, please do. You may regret eloping later in life, and your family won't get to attend the eloping. You want your marriage to last. Start off by doing things right.

I do because I'm in the same predicament. I have a very small family and I've never wanted a big wedding. My boyfriend on the other hand has a nice size family and wants a huge wedding. Now so more than ever, I want a small ceremony either here or as a destination wedding because there are people in his immediate family that are just miserable and love to make everyone else miserable. I just keep picturing myself having to deal with people who are never happy putting their two cents in and not having a dime to contribute. I want to save us some frustration because planning a wedding is time consuming and frustrating on its own without unwanted, unsolicited comments or advice from desolate people.
