Abcnews, had a survey dealing with this topic and I just can't see where it is right for the government to tell me how to discipline my child or children. I wanted to know how other people felt about this prefereable those with kids. Also, I'm NOT in favor of child abuse so that is definitely not what I'm saying.

I was discussing this with my children the other day after I heard what this woman is trying to do. My 11 yr old said to me "so its better for a child to not have their parents for a year, than getting a pop on the butt?!?" So theres my answer, I am their mother, I carried them 9 months, I labored through bring them into this world, I will decide how to discipline them.

Most definitely discipline your child in public. Yelling, swearing, hitting, is an absolute no-no (at any time, by the way), but you have to set boundaries and structure for your child or he'll walk all over you. You did nothing wrong. In the future, when someone gives you that kind of look, ask her if she'd like a time out too.

Until someone births my children for me, they have no right to tell me how to raise and discipline my children. Have you noticed that ever since the government has stepped in with all these rules about what is and is not child abuse, the children in this world have gotten OUT OF CONTROL?

I definitely don't think that the government has a right to tell us how to discipline our children. But, it's my understanding that the new law being proposed applies to children 3 and under. It is possible that they are trying to set boundaries for parents, are there perhaps unusually high child abuse cases among this age group? I'll have to research this proposal and the motivation behind it further.

The fact is, if there are no guidelines, some parents go overboard, and since there was no guidelines, they can't be prosecuted. The problem with any law is that sometimes it does not apply to those of us out here who are decent people, but we still get caught by the technicalities of it and get into trouble, but on the other side of it, without some of these laws, more children would remain in the care of irresponsible abusive parents, and are sometimes even killed because of it. I guess the main point is that there should be laws for these things, but they should be more fair than they are.

No, I don't have kids, but I'll try to see this from an adult's point of view. I agree with you. The way you discipline your kids is up to you, because they're your kids, and you know what's best for them. I'm with you on that one =D

However, the government does have a right to protect children from harm, and I think this is what they are trying to do with this survey.

Sounds like Big Brother is peeking in windows these days!

No one has the "right" to dictate to you how to discipline your kiddos. If you discipline with love, are consistant between the mother & father's decisions (both agree on issues), have patience, and have a Spiritual base (we answer to a higher authority for reponsibility of our actions), then you are fine.

Because of the few who abuse, all others have to be forced to adhere to what some psycho-babble "experts" say about proper handling of child rearing issues. That is bunk.

Do what you know is right and hang the so-called "experts"!!!

Unfortunately there are child protection agencies in the US and Children's Aid societies in Canada because of child abuse.

Physical discipline, including spanking is not acceptable it is called beating. Psychological abuse is equally not okay.

Ever wonder why the gov. is getting involved??

Why are there so many messed up people hurting other people/themselves and children??

They learned it from someone, somewhere.

I would need to see what ABC News said about disciplining your child.
In a perfect world, everyone should be able to live the way the what to. But, we know the world isn't perfect and neither are people.
Some people are better at raising their children than others. Maybe the Government was giving guidelines or suggestions?
I have three kids I don't hit or spank. I try really hard not to yell. I talk to my kids, reason with my kids, I give them timeouts and l also let them know that somethings are a privilege.

On the hand, there are lots of families that accept Government assistance by getting food stamps, money, etc...
As a parent who gives my kids money, food, clothing and shelter, I would prefer that they listen to what I say.

I think people need to mind their own business sometimes! Your children are your children, and your the one that has to live with them. No one knows what is going to work in terms of discipling your children, other than you. When I was growing up, there were no books telling you how to raise your child. Now of course, there is a line that can be crossed, and then yes I believe people can step in.

Personally I believe in spanking, but only my husband and I can spank. No grandparents, no babysitters, no one else can spank my child. Spanking does not mean beating, and I think that's what most people assume.
