For a quick and simple change, I like to put a small braid in, leaving the rest of my hair down. To keep this from becoming boring, I like to put in different colored ribbons or one of those black cord necklaces.(http://bjcrystalgifts.com/cgi-bin/shop.plx/SID=PUT_SID_HERE/page=jewelry.html ).
For the ribbon:
1) Get a ribbon long enough to fold in half, then thread it evenly through a rubberband at the top of your hair (can be all of your hair or simply a small section). Wrapping both sides around the rubberband a couple times should effectively hide it.
2) Braid down as far as possible, using only two strands and letting the ribbon act as the third.
3) Secure the ends, along with the ribbon, and bring the ends of the ribbon up to tie in a bow around the rubberband.
The necklace is slightly trickier, as far as attaching it to the hair goes. First of all, and this is very important, DO NOT use one of those cord necklaces with a metal clasp, stick to the ones that close with a knot and simply slip over the head. Now:
1. Seperate out a thin section of hair for the braid. As with the ribbon, let the necklace act as a third strand.
2. Seperate the hair into two strands, holding the necklace in the middle (you may need an extra pair of hands for just this part) and making sure the knot is at the top (so as to be hidden under the hair when you start braiding), weave one strand of hair over the side of the necklace closest to it, then under the opposite side. Repeat for the other strand, and the necklace should now be effectively "tied" into your hair.
3) Braid as usual. Not weaving the hair through the necklace, but crossing over as with a normal braid.
4) Leave enough of a trailing end to allow the charm on the necklace to dangle a bit, and secure by wrapping a rubberband around both hair and necklace no more than twice, the rest of the loops should be around the hair ONLY, to allow the charm to swing freely.
