My friend and I are taking a road trip to NY, NY this weekend. We want two nights in a cheap hostel (just somewhere to sleep), but we don't want to stay in an unsafe neighborhood. Please fill me in on the areas that are "safe" and those that aren't.

The New York Times recommended The Gershwin Hotel and said it's spotless. The area is location is excellent, East 27th Street off Fifth Avenue. There are rooms for less than $50; the cheaper rooms have bunk beds and you have to share the bathroom. Look at their website; there are pictures of the rooms. There are hostels and the YMCA with dormitory rooms (sleeps 8 people or more) for a little less money. The Gershwin's website has a phone number, a fax number and an email address.

NYC is extremely expensive.
Harlem is not safe, neither are Bronx and Queens.
Brooklyn is pretty safe and your best bet for affordable lodging. You're not getting anything under $200/night in Manhatten.
