I recently discovered that my 2 yr old chihuahua is blind or partially blind, she does'nt blink when you wave your hand in front of her eyes she only blinks when you touch her eye lashes. She started bumping into stuff and would not jump up into the car. What would cause this in such a young dog?he has had all her shots and gets plenty of good quality food to eat HELP! I love her to death, she is mu FUR CHILD! No I have not taken her to the vet yet, she's not in any pain that I can tell.

well if you havent taken her to the vet then how do you know shes blind. Not blinking and bumping into things isnt always the sign of blindess. It can signal the dog is GOING blind or there is a nuerlogical issue in her brain. She very well COULD be blind but unless your an optomitrist eye doctor i suggest getting her diagnosed for what it is that is causing it. Cause if caught early alot of problems can be treated with medication and surgery. With all that said, Chihuahuas are prone to PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) common in badly bred dogs. The retina detaches from the back of the eye, essentially not letting any light reflect and no image is sent through the optic nerve. This is irreversible and progressive. It leads to total blindness and is genetically passed from parents to offspring. There is no pain with this.
Also momma could have had poor diet, and nutrition, before-during-and after pregnancy and while nursing. Omega 3 deficencies, and Vitamin deficencies in female dogs during pregnancy cause alot of problems in puppies that are born later. Doesnt matter if puppy eats well later in life, he didnt get all the great parts while he was a puppy in momma.

I just found out from my vet that my 5 yr. old pug has gone blind. Her eyes are fine but it is the brain that is causing her blindness. She was sooo small when I got her and now is only 12 lbs. but my friend has her sister and she is over 25 lbs. So sad to see my Pebbles bang into anything that I took it forgranted that she would go around it. Bang into a phone poll, a parked car, a storm drain, closed door, etc. How do you retrain a dog in walking. Being in a wheelchair makes it hard for me to get around and now I have to watch out for my dog. So hard, wish I cound afford to get her an MRI to see what it is in the brain and maybe the vets then could help her to be able to see again.

I have five chihuahuas, and have never had a problem like this. The only way to know for sure, what is causing her to bump into stuff, is a vet. The vet is the only one who can determine whether she's blind or whether she has a different problem. Poor Baby!

The vet isn't for pain, the vet is for maintaining your dog's health, on a regular basis.
Please take you dog in, there may be a chance that this is a virus that can be reversed if treated immediately.
Regular check ups and blood work can go a long way to heading these problems off before they begin.
And please, don't touch your dog's eyes again, there may be something lodged in them.

Well, the dog clearly needs to see a vet!!!!!!! MAybe the condition is treatable, or they can tell you what is wrong and maybe stop it from getting worse!!!!! Jeez...there are other reasons to take a pet to the vet other than being in pain!!!!
If I discovered my dog seemed to be suddenly blind, I would be off to the vet so fast I would NOT have time to post something on the computer!!!!

The only way to really tell is to take her to the vet. She may not show signs of pain, but that doesn't mean there isn't any.
Your vet may be able to diagnos her right then, or may refer you to a specialist....it could be a genetic fault, or a reaction to vax. You need to take her in to find out.

it could be cataracts, they just don't affect the elderly in humans or dogs, I found a 3 yr.old buff cocker that I was going to try to adopt from a nearby humane society that was TOTALLY blind with them. I would suggest taking her to the vet to get her vision checked for sure. Cataracts aren't painful, just very debilitating to those that get them.

Could you still please take her to the vet to confirm? She could have an aneurysm! Or a stroke. Or anything. The blindness could be temporary but she needs to be seen. Could you please, please, please take her to the vet????
She doesn't need to be in pain to go to the vet. Take her in immediately. We seriously don't have the answers here for you. Take her in right now, or just give her away to someone who can afford a vet. Seriously.
Listen to yourself. Your dog is BLIND! Suddenly blind, and your debating whether or not she needs medical care. PLEASE! VET! NOW! If you need info on help paying, please ask, I am available on IM or e-mail. One or the other.
P.S. It could also be hydro-encyphylitis (sp?) something that plagues Chi's as a breed.
EDIT TO POST: What did the vet say? I hope your dog is okay!

Hmmm...... a good question. I've read about diseases in dogs and, even though highly unlikely, may have MS or Cystonie's syndrome. I suggest you check for this. Another more crude explanation is that she bumped into something hard and hurt her eyes. Tell her that i wish her nothing but the best for her.

Most likely poor breeding. Genetic issues plague overbred dogs. Your just another sucker. You should go ahead and call your vet for a specialist. We are working with a dane going blind now and no one wanted him. (He's also deaf.)
