I just bought a seat cover. I guess I should take it back?

Here's the thing...

A soft cushion will feel better at first, but then as you go through your workout it will become MORE painful because more of your butt PLUS your "soft spots" will be in contact... yeowch!

If you do anything, purchase a pair of cycling shorts. As you become more fit your musclature will become firmer and the pain will subside.

It's going to be uncomfortable for a while, that's just how it is. After about a week, 2 or 3 classes at your gym, it will get a lot better. A seat cushion or folded towels won't help, padded bike shorts will help a little. Since you are at a gym looking for a specific seat won't help either. Developing your butt muscles is the best way. Keep riding!

Indianapolis is a horrible place to see a race you can only see a small part of the track. Because of the seats on the inside of the track. The history surrounding the place is cool but its not worth the crappy views. I went to the brickyard 400 two years ago and i sat at the start/ finish line and the cars would come out of 4th come down the front stretch and go into first and out of sight for 30 second of nothingness

I would advise against a cushion actually. While it will feel more comfortable it forms more to your body which can be a problem. The ideal is to have a seat that fits you properly, so that your sit bones support the majority of your weight. Otherwise you'll be supporting weight on soft tissue that can be damaged.

I agree against the gel covers... they just end up feeling mushy and won't help at all. You will have to get used to riding for a bit, so in part, give it time.

Saddle is also important. It's not that it's a male vs female saddle, but that your sitbones are resting on the saddle. There are several width saddles, from like 130 to 160. It's just depend on your behind.

Specialized has this butt-measuring gel stuff, in which you sit, and when you stand up, on the gel it leaves your sit bones, and you just measure that distance to find a saddle for you. Just come in when it's more crowded in your bike shop and yell 'hey, I want my butt measured'... not.

Just talk with a salesperson in your bike shop and he might help.

a soft seat will actually hurt more in the long run, you kinda have to toughen up down there. try cycling shorts w/padding. good luck

you may find relief in gluteus padded cycling shorts..which contain pads for your gluteus maximus...(no its not a seat cushion but i find they work just as well for my 3-12 hr bike rides)

it has nothing to do with the seat....it's your butt muscles...they just need to get used to the exercise...
it might hurt like unholy hell for the next 2 days if you stick with it and keep riding in a few days it will go away and never hurt again...trust me

There are male and female saddles (that what a bike seat is called). Chances are, since your avatar is female, that you are as well, and that you were using a male saddle.

Talk to the gym about using a woman's saddle instead.
