She is about 8 years old, spayed, has been living as an indoor cat for a year after being indoor/outdoor for most of her life. Eats dry food, uses a litter box. Overweight from the lack of indoor exercise. We were thinking (and hoping against) a UTI, wanted to know if there were any other, more home-treatable possibilities.

Thank you for "SEND HER TO A VET" 50 times over, I realize that. An immediate visit is problematic, however, thus my spending the intervening time trying to get more detailed information.

Also, it is important to note that this is not when she is urinating, but rather just a leak. Almost seems like a symptom of being in heat, if she were not spayed.

Hi Geri...diagnosing through the Internet is quite difficult as a physical evaluation is best to confirm if in fact your cat has a lower urinary tract disorder/infection. Please consider ringing your veterinarian and they will help you determine if your cat needs to be evaluated and treated respectively. This truly sounds like a visit is necessary.
Here's a veterinary website that goes into detail about feline lower urinary tract disorders/infection: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_feline_lower_urinary_tract_dis.html

I'm going to do you a favor and not state the obvious here. I will say this though, cats still go through heat even when they are sprayed. So it could be a symptom of that, How long has this been going on? If it hasn't been a long time then I would give it a day or two. Is the cat in pain? Maybe getting something at the petstore for the pain if she is hurting. But the obvious is definitely the best thing for your cat as I don't think that there is any home treatable possiblities. Also its not when she/he is peeing, a UTI is usually a burning sensation and blood when the person or this case the cat is peeing, it could be something serious considering she is 8 years old, that's not a young kitten.

Urinary crystals sounds like a possibility. IF it's crystals, switching the cat to a low-sodium food should help with that (and possibly also with her weight).
But she still needs to see the vet in order to figure out what the issue is. It could be something else!

I know you don't want to hear it but she needs to see a vet pronto!! It could be much worse than a UTI. I hope you are taking all of our comments to heart and are not going to make your kitty suffer.

sounds like a UTI, but you need to collect some urine in a clean container and take the urine to the vet to have them test it, if it does have one they can prescribe something to help, but you must follow the vets directions, make sure the cat can pee eat and drink

In some cities and states they have animal police that prosecute pet owners for cruelty, abuse and neglect. You would certainly be a candidate for that. Take the damn cat to the vet!

Seriously..Why are you posting this on here?
You should go call your vet and get the kitty in to be seen.
Would you go to a message board and ask if it were yourself?
Or would you make an appt A.S.A.P?
I dont have alot of money either. So i do understand not wanting to rush animals in at every whim..But your kitty is BLEEDING ....I should think i would rush mine in and not rely on a home remedy!

Blood always means trouble. Take kitty to the veterinarian sooner than later. Don't mess with home remedies if you really care about your cat. Your kitty's life could be on the line.
It may only be a stress related issue... but only your veterinarian will know for sure. Please take her to the vet asap.
