On the Nick jr Website Uniqua has been explained as this...

Uniqua
A curious, self-confident and high-spirited pink creature with polka dots, she's almost always sweet and friendly, though her strong opinions and occasional stubbornness get in the way sometimes. She is more tomboyish than Tasha, and often imagines herself in roles requiring brains and fortitude (scientist, pirate captain, etc). More than once she's got the mystery solved and interjects with a "You guys!" Much controversy has been raised over what species she belongs to. Suggestions included a ladybug (due to her pink polka dots), an ant (due to her antennae), and even an alien. But actually, she's a unique creature that's unlike any other in the world, and Uniqua is also the name of her species! [4]
Speaking voice: LaShawn Tináh Jefferies

Singing voice: Jamia Simone Nash

Dancer: Hattie Mae Williams

Uniqua's stats say that is her name and her species! So I guess she is just a creature created for the show. My son also loves the backyardigans! I could sing you all the songs!

Uniqua isnt anything in particular thats why they call her that, because shes unique. I read on the backyadigans site that uniqua is her name And Species. So shes pretty much just a made up character.

Uniqua isn't any sort of animal. She is simply a uniqua which is a species the writer made up. It does make sense that she is the only one of her kind seeing as her name is Uniqua.

Lol, dont dare go there!!!! Just leave her as uniqua, "unique" Never try to make sense out of childrens cartoons, I applaud you for taking your time and getting to learn and know about what your son watches on tv, very very good. I also recommend you go to nick jr and get a free account, they have lots of thing for the young to do including crafts away from the tv and pc.

This has been bothering me too! I so have been wondering the same thing! I googled it and found a website (I didn't keep it sorry!) that said the creator claims Uniqua is nothing. She doesn't represent an animal, but she's supposed to be unique to herself.

Uniqua is EXACTLY that! Unique! She is just her! There is nothing else like her...I guess they did that to help kids understand that just because everyone else seems "normal' like they fit in somewhere, that's ok to be "UNIQUA"...hahaha! Good idea though!!
