Your friend might not have usable fingerprints. Although fingerprints do not "fade" over time, it is possible for the skin to become damaged to the extent that the fingerprints are not usable/recognizable. For example, a person might have severely burned their fingers to the point that the scar tissue does not create what would be typically considered a recognizable fingerprint. Also, a very small number of people suffer from severe dermatological conditions that cause the skin on their fingers to frequently flake and peel, which can also render their fingerprints unusable. This has been a particular problem in instances where one of these individuals wishes to go into a line of work, such as teaching, that requires mandatory fingerprinting for performing a background check. Unless there is something noticeably abnormal with your friend's fingers, she has fingerprints but they may be light and difficult to capture using some fingerprinting techniques (for example a livescan has difficulty with exceptionally dry hands, but this is remedied by application of lotion, very shallow prints will have difficulty with traditional wet ink pads,etc.).

I've never heard of prints "fading", but in hiring people, dealt with a former cosmetologist that no longer had fingerprints due to the hair chemicals she had used over the years.

Yeah fingerprints can wear off in time. However it usually happens to people who are involved in construction and lift heavy rough materials all day. Usually cinder blocks are to blame for this. As for fading on their own, no she had to do something that made them go away.

No they can't "fade" and I don't think they go away totally but can wear down.
