Well first I'd like to say that there is no right way, whatever sect you study isn't really all that important. Honestly the best advice I can give you is to talk to a monk or nun. If that isn't possible I recomend any begginers books. There is a great book, 'buddhism for begginers" by venerable Thubten Chodron. She is An American born nun in the Tibetan tradition, but she is very insightful, and a great dharma teacher.

Buddhism for dummies i guess? Not saying youre a dummy, but it would be a good start to anything that you dont know much about.

I have a pocket version of the Dhammapada, great book and great to travel wtih.

Challenging Times - a powerful collection of stories by an extraordinary range of Buddhists. See the rewards of opening your heart when the going gets tough - and the gifts of joy, forgiveness and compassion.

If you can find one on tibetan, zen and mayahana buddhism id reccomend it, it tells you the different practices and teachings of each sect.

If you want to know about Tibetan Buddhism all of the Dalai Lama's books are well written. Find a general one.

If you want to know about Zen Buddhism check out:
Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen

It's my favorite buddhist book ever.

To get a brief overview of Buddhism, the best 2 are the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Buddhism" and the "For Dummies" Guide. From there you can determine if you agree with it and which "vehicle" of Buddhism appeals to you most.

Also online try www.buddhanet.net it's a great learning resource as well, with free information, books to download, teachings, etc.

The best book I have ever read is Zhuan Falun (Truning the Law Wheel). It is the book that guides the practice of Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) which is a genuine and upright cultivation practice of the Buddha School.
There is also an introductory book called Falun Gong (Law Wheel QiGong).
Both of these books so clearly answered all the questions I had about life and the universe.

Previously I have bought and read numerous Buddhist books, but never have I had the questions that I wondered about so clearly answered until I read Zhuan Falun and Falun Gong.

These books are also available for free online! You can view them at the following website:
http://www.falundafa.org/eng/books.htm
Some bookstores also carry these books, but you can download/read them for free online!

Enjoy!!

I visited an amazing Buddhist temple in California. It's called the Hsi Lai temple (pronounced si-lie) and it's one of the largest in the west. Anyway, they gave us some really cool pamphlets that are very informative. The website for the pamphlets is www.blpusa.com . I don't know if they have the pamphlets on there, but they have some beautiful books.

Not speaking as a Buddhist, but as a student of religions, I found "The Perfection of Wisdom" (translated by R.C. Jamieson), and "The Path to Enlightenment" by the Dalai Lama very informative and easy to understand.
