Painting sports figures?

Does anyone know of regulations or restrictions selling paintings of professional athletes?

Many athletes have trademarked their name and likeness. That's why you don't see any markings on those football photos in those TV ads. This doesn't prevent you from painting generic athletes. You could even paint from a photo and switch markings or likenesses (for instance painting somebody else's head on the athlete's body).
