Whoever did the asking should pay. But it never hurts to be prepared - some people expect everything to be 50/50.

If you feel awkward about the other person paying, offer to cover tip or pay for the drinks. If your date declines your offer, accept the meal and whatnot graciously - heck, even men like to be wined and dined on occasion!

Who asked whom out for the date?
Who makes more?
Who earns what?
The point is, maybe since it is the first date, and you don't know where the relationship is heading, you can each pay your own way. But guys "usually" pay for the first day.

I think the person who asks should be willing to pay for the date. On a first date, if the couple agrees, each person can pay for him/herself.

Whoever asked. it would be stupid to ask someone to go on a dinner date and make them pay for it. It is polite to pay when you ask.

If he asked you out on a date, than he should pay. You can volunteer to pay for yours and see what he says, but if he did ask you out on the date, than he should pay.

I would have to say who ever did the asking.

If you want to pay, even though you did not do the asking - then go ahead and grab the cheque first.

Whoever did the asking, unless the man insists on paying...in which case, let him. Of course, you could always go dutch.

Whichever person asked for the date.

Of course, in this day and age of equal rights AND equal responsibilities, that still means the guy. Go figure.
