They accept and prepare bodies for burial and/or cremation. They provide services to the family of the deceased; such as securing needed documents [death certificates; insurance policies; etc]; they arrange for purchase and/or sell directly caskets or cremation urns. They arrange for the obtaining of a burial site; negotiate with the cemetery and conduct interment services. They provide transportation services such as limos. They provide 'viewing' rooms for wakes and can also provide rooms for actual services or memorials. They maintain records of all services they have performed.

When my Dad died, the Mortician/Funeral Home took care of EVERY thing - and worked with the U.S. Army and Arlington National Cemetery for his High Honors Funeral/Interment. They took care of newspaper articles and obit notices; as well as worked with me on selection of casket, etc etc They do much more than embalm.

They drain their bodies of blood, inject them full of embalming fluid, make them upto look presentable, dress them in their burial clothes, and put then in the coffin.
