My wife and I were married in June of '06. I am wondering how this effects file taxes and if for any portion of the year, can we file jointly.

Yes, you can file jointly. You can do so for the whole year. The tax law only requires that you be married at 12/31/2006 in order to file jointly. This means if you got married on New Year's Eve, you can file jointly for the whole year.

Yes. I think that all status is determined on 12/31. This is also important for those who are considering divorce, because they must be divorced by 12/31 to file as unmarried.
