I was deployed for a year to Iraq . It was all army, all the time . Thats not a bad thing , I'm just trying to give you a peek into our world (soldiers). I worked 12-18 hours a day 7 days a week . It was hot and dirty most of the year, during winter it was cold and dirty . The food was great , the accomidations were ... less then great . We heard gunfire every day , and mortars every night . I can't tell you much more without breaking operational security , except that I did guard duty, drove in convoys , provided security for visiting dignitaries , and anything else they could find for me to do .

My husband has been to Iraq twice, the first time for 15 months and the second for about 10. He leaves for Iraq again sometime this year. It sucks, but we knew what he was signing up for when he joined. Like someone else said, he works 12-18 hours days, 7 days a week, when he's deployed. Last time he was there the living conditions weren't too terrible, though, and I hear from him pretty often when he's gone (it ranges from once a week or less to every day). They have internet and phones in most places, and webcams sometimes so we still get to see each other. The only really good thing about it is that he gets paid more when he's deployed. :)

I spent 20 years in the Navy and have been deployed more times than I can remember. The normal lenght of time is 6 months depending on your unit that your attached to. I was with the Sea Bees and they deploy every 6 months but it could depend on mission and where you go. I was away from home many years and almost missed my children growing up. I've been around the world 11 times and seen 82 different counties. Deployed on a ship it seems to take forever to get from place to place but most of the time it's worth it. I believe I've had a life that some people could only dream of.

I was deployed to Kuwaite for four months. I was a printer, printing up leaflets, on 12 hour shifts, we had one day off and I would go to kuwaite city and go to the mall or TGIFridays in town. I was also sperated from my family for a year in Korea during Y2K, before 911. I loved the shopping and touring the country, I missed my family though. I learned as much of the language as I could and stayed away from the red light (ho's)district and the club scene. Kareokee was big down there, so I did that at night.

Yes I have been. I was gone for six months at a time for West Pacs on 4 different times. I was sent to UAE, Saudi, and the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm, Desert Freedom, and have been to many other countries. No deployment exceeded 6-7 mths.

My fiance did one tour in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and he won't talk about it at all. I figure that when/if he ever wants to talk about it then he will come to me and talk to me, but until then I'm not holding my breath. It's a very hard thing to deal with when someone you love is deployed to a dangerous area, but you just pray that they stay safe and come home soon.

I was in the Navy for 5 years. I went on 2 deployments. My first deployment started on September 11th 2001, and it was 7 months long, with only "eyeball liberty" ( we got to see land but didn't pull in) we had 2 "beer days " meaning we were out at sea for 42 consecutive days with out pulling in ( it was horrible, imagine your in a dumpster with 100 people you hate and you cant leave there for 6 months, yeah it's like that) . My second deployment was 6 months long started on Sep. 19th 2003, we got to pull in more often I don't think we were at sea for longer then 2 weeks at a time, it was great when we pulled in but when we were at sea we worked LONG hours, but it was worth it when we pulled in to port, we didn't really have to work except on duty days and if we did have to work it was only for half a day! Hope this helps

My husband is on his second tour of Iraq. He doesn't talk about it much, but it's certainly no pleasure cruise.
