I have 7 beutiful Great Dane puppies and have been asked if we were going to have them removed. We never crop there ears, so is this really nessasary? And if so how old should they be when it is done?

Yes they should, docking and croping is cruel, but dew claw removing can save them pain. What if they dew claw was cought on somthing? What if it tore off?

Usually they are only removed on breeds that are having tails done.

I would not remove them on Danes, and when it is done, it is done BY the 5th day of life!!!!!!

I have Newfs, and we NEVER,NEVER remove dewclaws. It is NOT done by routine for most breeds. They rarely get caught on anything. If they are on the REAR legs, and they are a breed that should NOT have them there, then they are removed, but most dogs have them on the front legs.

Here is what the AKC breed standard says about Danes and dewclaws:
Forequarters
The forequarters, viewed from the side, shall be strong and muscular. The shoulder blade must be strong and sloping, forming, as near as possible, a right angle in its articulation with the upper arm. A line from the upper tip of the shoulder to the back of the elbow joint should be perpendicular. The ligaments and muscles holding the shoulder blade to the rib cage must be well developed, firm and securely attached to prevent loose shoulders. The shoulder blade and the upper arm should be the same length. The elbow should be one-half the distance from the withers to the ground. The strong pasterns should slope slightly. The feet should be round and compact with well-arched toes, neither toeing in, toeing out, nor rolling to the inside or outside. The nails should be short, strong and as dark as possible, except that they may be lighter in harlequins. Dewclaws may or may not be removed.

That means they can be removed, but they do not have to be, and frankly, I have not seen a Dane that had had them removed.

They have to be removed in the first 5 days of life, or it is painful for the dog. I don't recommend having the dew claws removed unless, when they are older, they are floppy and rip off easily. It is basically a cosmetic surgery like having the ears cropped and tails docked so that certain breeds fit breed standards.

It's more beneficial to remove the dew claws. They are not used for anything and may get caught on objects. Once caught they could tear off causing a lot of pain or infections. You can do them at any time. When they are still very young puppies or older and going in for a spay or neuter. Most dew claws are only joined by skin and blood vessels so a snip and a few stitches usually do the trick.

Good Luck

Dew claws do not have to be removed. Generally they are removed on breeds that also have their tails docked, and it is done at the same time.

The only reason for removing declaws is a matter of safety. In many of the working breeds that have their tails docked for health they also have the dewclaws removed. Dewclaws can get stuck on things and torn or ripped.

As a general rule of thumb, i do not recommend removing declaws in other breeds unless the dewclaw is very loose and dangling. The reason behind this is then it becomes a significant risk of injury. In thoses cases, it can be done at the time of spay/neuter or anytime after 5-6 months of age.

I have 5 dogs and only one has her dew claws removed, basically I decided to do this because hers were very prominant and wobbly which meant they were more likey to be caught on something. As I do scent training etc in woodlands this could have been a real problem, but as I say I have not had the others done as their dew claws are normal.
