Depends on what you mean by prophet. Some people are prophets - the most holy and loving people no matter their religion. Then you have people who think they are prophets. They profess about having dreams where they can control angels or see the future - they need to stop smoking whatever it is they are smoking and get a real life. Real prophets are possible, but rare today.

No prophet has ever had a divine mandate. If God existed it would have manifested itself through multiple prophets with supernatural powers simultaneously to all the ethnic groups that form the human family. That way "God" would have avoided being "responsible" for all the religious wars, atrocities, the Holocaust and 9/11

Yes...there are those who are appointed by The Holy Spirit to sit in the office of Prophet. These are people who are anointed to prophesy and to also prophesy into the future as well by The Spirit of God. Prophets did not cease with Jesus as some have said. God has always kept a remnant for Himself. If you wanna know more, contact me. PEACE!!!

Second part of your question is "No".

Why not if the word prophet is expanded in its coverage. You see, everyone that can tell you if you don't believe in Jesus you shall end up in hell. So he is prophesizing. So he is a prophet.I am also a prophet, because I also know to warn anyone who denies Jesus will face the frightful eventuality and those who accept him will be saved from condemnation but into life eternal and heavenly home.

God says in His word that ALL of His sons and daughters shall prophesy. God will use anyone who is willing. He used a donkey to prophesy in the bible because the people refused to listen to Him through a man. I do not believe however that God would give a man or woman the title of a prophet if they do not keep His commandments.
I do beleieve that God is readying us as the body of Christ to rise up and be the voice and stop worrying about what people will say about them and think about them. Who cares what people think or say about me when I deliver the Word of the Lord.... I worry about what if they dont receive Jesus? Because it is not me giving the Word, it is God through me...
Hope this helps :)

Yes, there are people here and now who call themselves prophets. We don't listen to them anymore because we can see and hear them, so they seem ridiculous to us.
The distinct advantage that prophets from 1000 years ago have is that we can't see or hear them, so they seem wise and inspired.
It's ok to say good things about yourself and/or your god, but it's much better to have someone else say those things for you.
