He's just a friend, but I still want to be friends and not hurt his feelings.

Be honest and direct, but be kind. Say something like: "I like you and you are important to me, but I don't feel that there is the right chemistry between us to for us to be dating. I really value our friendship and I want to stay friends with you." Your statement starts with positive, then moves to negative, then back to positive, so he's not only hearing "NO!"

The exact words aren't important. The important things to communicate are: 1. you like him and the friendship is important, 2. you don't resent him for asking you out, 3. you are not interested in dating or having a sexual relationship with him.

His feelings might be hurt when you say no, but as long as you are kind to him, you've behaved well, and any feelings of hurt or rejection are his responsibility---rejection is one of the risks of asking someone out, and everyone needs to learn how to face it gracefully so they can move on and find someone they DO have the right chemistry with.

Best of luck, and I hope you can stay friends!

Just tell him that you value his friendship more than anything but it's just not in the stars for the two of you to date but you still want to stay good friends.

If he really wants you to be happy, he will accept it.

The word "No" should clarify things, it's simple and to the point. If he's as good as a friend as you think he is, he will have no problem understanding this and accepting it.

Just say, I like someone else, you're too ugly for even my pet turtle. I'll let you date my dog though. Oh, and don't let the door hit you in the *** when you leave.
