First, there are two types of gum disease - gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis only affects the gums and it is reversible with good oral hygiene habits. Periodontitis is present when there is permanent damage that has been done to the bone and supporting tissues that hold the teeth in their place.

Gum disease is caused by a number of factors. It is a combination of the bacterial plaque in the mouth and the body's immune response. However, you must have the presence of bacterial plaque in the mouth. So it doesn't matter about stress or hormones or diet, if you are brushing and flossing properly and regularly, then you shouldn't have gingivitis, because there is no plaque present.

Ways to prevent/treat gingivitis are to brush 2-3 times daily and floss daily. Most people hate flossing, but then they realize the importance of it once they start losing their teeth. Periodontitis begins in between the teeth, and flossing is the best way to keep that area clean. You can also use an antibacterial rinse, such as Listerine. Periodontitis must be treated at a dental office. The best way to learn about gum disease is to visit your dentist and get details on your condition and learn what you can do at home.

Gun disease is NOT always the result of poor dental hygiene!
Stress can be a major factor because stress causes the bacteria in the mouth to multiply much faster even in a very clean mouth.
If you are prone to gum disease, you might try rinsing with a peroxide solution. There are many on the market, and you can make your own with three parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. Your dental hygienist can advise you on this, and don't be ashamed because they deal with this constantly.
Flossing, brushing, rinsing, and a regular visit to your dentist can go a long way in controlling gum disease. You can also take a regular dose of vitamin c, known to help gum disease.
I hope this helps Good luck

Gum disease is caused by poor oral hygiene, nothing else. If all you have is gigivitis, then a deep cleaning with the dentist and adequate oral hygiene will clear it up. If however, it has advanced to pyhorhea a deep infection of the gums, then you need to see the dentist for more invasive treatment.
