When my Jack Russell gave birth to 5 puppies, I had a box for her to whelp in. It had sides about 8 inches high (to high for her to get out in her condition) and put newspapers in the bottom, and it was in a room with hard floor. Then I got lots of clean rags, 'cause the puppies come out kind of yucky. The dog should break the sac around the puppy but if she doesn't you have to do it, and then you'll need the rags. Then, for after the birth, I had put lots of raggy cloths in her crate, and put that in the warmest room in the house, but she insisted on making a "nest" in our couch where she brought all of the puppies.

Make sure your vet knows she'll be going into labor soon incase of an emergancy. You'll want your vets number close at hand. If she isn't on puppy chow yet, put her on it. After she has her litter she will be very skinny and the pups will take a lot out of her. The fat and milk in the puppy chow will help her produce milk and give her enough nutrients. The best advice I can give you is to call your vet and ask them what to expect. A lot can happen during labor and if you don't know how to prepare for it, I doubt you know how to handle various situations. For your dogs sake please prepare yourself and your dog through a good vet.

Your dog will already know what to do, all you have to do is prepare a comfortable place with lots of towels (that you can dispose later). Remember, your DOG should feel comfy, not you! What I did for my dog is prepare a basket full of towels, my dog liked snuggling in it, then let the dog select the spot she'd like best, then brought the basket there. In two or three days before the delivery, your dog will search for a right place, so 'listen' to your dog! You'll know what she want. (Trust yourself, too)Good luck
