There are a wide range of "sports" cars out there. It really depends on your definition of the sport of driving. Are you buying a car to look good in, or for performance? Do you like straight line acceleration or curve handling ability. If you like raw muscle in a straight line, and don't care about gas mileage and expensive maintenance, then go for the Corvette. If you like good handling and road handling performance then go for a Toyota MR2 or Mazda Miata. Both get 30 MPG on the highway, can out corner the Vette and are inexpensive to maintain and repair.

Avoid the Vette, because $25k doesn't buy much in terms of a dependable Vette, plus maintenance will be a premium. If you want a dependable, fast sports car, buy a used Acura RSX or a 3 series BMW.

I'd get something cute and small, like a Miata. But that's just me. I'm not much of a sports car person.
Good luck with your purchase!
