Hi all,

My roomie doesn't like fish much less the scent of it. I don't eat meat...so fish is all I have. I love salmon so I like to cook it. Is there anything I can do to sort of lessen the smell as I cook it? (even air fresheners don't work when I am done, and I also have to open windows (in the dead of winter!!) to air out the place. I feel badly for her...but I need to eat.

Suggestions??

When I cook fish, I pour vinegar in a bowl next to the stove and it some how absorbs the odor. I don't know how it works, but I cook catfish and I don't smell it.

I can't think of a thing that you haven't tried.

I think this situation simply calls for compromise, which is what roommates do. You don't mind if she cooks meat?

People don't have to be completely happy all the time you know, a bit of a compromise, like the smell of fish, is a small price to pay for having you as a friend and room mate.

I love the smell of salmon, grilling or roasting or baking or poaching or fried. Favorite food of mine. Hubby isn't a fan of fish, the smell is just something he puts up with, for me.

Catfish doesn't smell that bad anyway. Tuna, salmon, makerel, and perch is some of the smelliest types of fish you could cook. Close bedroom doors and crack a window and she should be fine. Have you also tried neutralizing air fresheners and not a scented one?

When I get ready to cook, I have a particular candle scent that I've found tends to help with the "cooking" odours. I use a tangerine-basil scented candle. I think it really helps. The vinegar thing is old-fashioned and helps, too. I find the vinegar fumes affect my asthma (my lungs were damaged in a fire). So, I limit vinegar use!

Just put a bowl of vinegar in the rooms that smell bad.

Wash the pan with vinegar.

That should do the trick.
