A truuly noble and dignified person GIVES forgiveness. Only self-hating morally lost persons ask some supposed external authority figure to supply forgiveness like a handout. "Pardon me for existing, O Lord and Master, for lo, I am not worthy, blah blah blah..." is the language of groveling slaves. The idea that you are somehow born into a state of alienation from your God is a false idea. There is no original sin.
However you can do these three things:
1. Forgive yourself for your faults.
2. Forgive others who have harmed you.
3. Where you can identify that you have harmed others, go to them and see if you can make it good, and above all give them the opportunity to see you as you are now and hopefully to forgive you for what you did to them.

Depending on your sins of your life. YOU can ask for forgiveness until you're blue in the face.....THERE are certain sins that are unforgivable!!
MURDER( whether been intent or not this also includes abortion)
ADULTERY( this means cheating of any kind)
are among a few that are unforgivable
basically YOU do the CRIME you will do the TIME!!!
so as far as steps are concern,
admitting your sins
ask for redemption
thats all you'll need to do!

Contrition - Forgive yourself and others
Love one another - regardless of who they are, especially people you don't like.
Try to live a good life
Accept that God has his arms around you and you are never alone.
That's what I think, just my opinion.

where did the number 4 come from? Regardless...one must recognize his/her need for forgiveness first...and that means accept that we sin and disobey... it may be obvious like 10 commandment kind of sin or subtle like knowing you are supposed to pay someone's electric bill and don't....
Forgiveness comes from God ... one must believe that He exists, then believe that He made provision for us to Him through His Son Jesus Christ who gave up His godliness to become like us... we must believe in our hearts and not doubt that He is the son of the Living God...the One true God.... and confess by saying out of our mouths ...Jesus i believe you are the son of God and that you died for me and rose again on the third day... confess... i have sinned and name the sin... ask Him...Lord forgive me for my sin.... and then thank Him for forgiving you....the steps are believe first... confess to God...in Jesus name... receive His forgiveness through faith ... and thank Him.... additionally stop the sin....
