All of a sudden my CPU usage is going through the roof. 60-90% and upto 100% while system idle process is any where from 88-99%. Processes arranged by usage places System Idle on top, which is appropriate, but I still get the #'s indicated above. There are brief periods where it just about balances out, but the spike happens again and can last for an undeterminable amount of time. I've tried Norton System Works (and its related utilities) Adaware SE, Norton Anit-Virus, & Trojan Hunter 4. I found some issues with Norton WinDoc and Trojan Hunter. I was able to resolve them, but the problem mentioned above was not resolved. Essentially, according to the TaskManager, my CPU is running over 100% (idle process + unidentifiable process [as all others are 0-10 usually]) I've also looked into the power supply. Any ideas?

Yeah, and what a pain to keep having to search out this stuff. What you need to do is identify what you don't need to start with Windows. There are one or more processes that eat up your resources.

For example, I bought Spyware Doctor and found out it kept my hard drive churning all the time. So I unloaded SD and back to normal. When did it start happening and what did you change right before then? YOu have to think about everything you do to the computer because you later find it kills your resources.

You have run some good programs - do a online scan from the link below - if this program said your computers clean - then i would have a look inside - sometime back my computer was running slow & the CPU usage was 100% - thinking my CPU fan was not working & i was over heating i was shocked to find the fan was working but the fins on the CPU were totally blocked with dust - i removed the fan & cleaned the fins & replaced the fan - result faster computer, CPU usage dropped.

If you're running XP then a system restore would be a good option and as someone has suggested - it is critical that you try to remember the last thing (modification you made) you did just before this started happening.

It sounds a lot like spyware or a virus has invaded your system. I strongly recommend using Ad Aware Personal SE. It is free and I find it to be a very powerful tool in ferreting out spyware.

Hope this helps.

If the computer is new, it may be a defective CPU, but that is doubtful. Most likely, a virus has corrupted a system file, or could still be there. Make sure your permissions allow you to alter system files and run virus scan again. Run virusscan and then run system works checkup. Also, make sure you don't have any periphials plugged in as you may have a driver issue.

I have a one-word solution : LINUX.

I've had that problem several times in the past, never figured it out. I wish Microsoft would fix problems like that in their new operating system instead of adding all those fancy schmancy features I will never use.

Look at your processes and check to see if your anti-virus software is taking up a lot of CPU. You can also google the processes that are taking up the CPU and see if you can delete them.

click start > run> then type msconfig and hit enter. Click system restore and try to restore your machine to a prior day in the week (obviously a day before you started having the problem). This is usually a good way to start troubleshooting.
