Best way? Get rid of the carpet. Other options are to use some of the products available at your local pet store there is also a product called zero odor that is pretty good. You should consider getting rid of the carpet though because the dog will smell that no matter what you do to disguise it and when and or if you can not get to the dog to take him/her out guess where the dog is going to pee when it cant hold it anymore? The carpet will also trap moisture against the flooring underneath and if its hard wood it will stain it black.

Get a kit from: www.justrite.com
I have no connection with the product, the site, etc. I've used the product and it works fantastic.
Whatever you do, don't use bleach or ammonia on your carpet. It will destroy your carpet and/or make the urine smell come out more.
I've heard that mouthwash works good for pee on carpet, but have never tried this.
Also, I've heard that if you use 1/4 cup liquid laundry detergent mixed with a can of cheap cola drink and lightly scrub the area, allowing it to sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse the area well with water, this will get the pee smell out as well.
Again.... I've never tried this method. Just heard that it works. If you try this, be sure to absorb as much of the moisture out of your carpet as possible. Even after you've gotten as much out as you can, put a clean dry cloth over the damp area and let it sit overnight to dry. You will find the next day that if it is the same color, you've gotten all the pee out, but if it is yellow, you will need to repeat the process.
There are many commercial & home remedies available online.

Throw out the carpet. If that don't work, get rid of the dog or train it to urinate outside. That may require you to walk it. Just a suggestion.

Use a steam cleaner and use Nature's Mircle or Simple Solution. They break the odor enzymes and bacteria down.
You have to beware because it may not be in your carpet but in the padding.
After steam cleaning - if you still smell the urine it's time for a new carpet.
Good Luck

I use the foam cleaning and also bought a steam cleaner and did the whole carpet. It's a lot of work, but it did an awesome job. Then I locked the dog out of that room.

1. Teach pup not to pee indoors!
2. Professional carpet cleaning. And if it's really bad, you may have to tear up the pad and the carpet and have them both replaced.

Take out the carpet and put in a laminate floor. That's what I wound up doing.

You go to the pet store and buy a special 'accident' spray, it removes the stain and the odour....however old stains are harder to remove and you should get your carpets cleaned.
