Cold turkey is the best way. If you are going absolutely nuts after a day and there is no way to continue then try wearing the patch for just a week or two then go cold turkey, and the immediate withdrawal won't be as bad. This worked for me.
As long as you are using an NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) you are still feeding the addiction so keep this in mind.
I have also heard the new drug Chantix has about a 20% success rate which is pretty good.

Well I went cold turkey since New Year's Eve, it is very hard but I am doing it. I smoked for 11 years; a pack a day. I am in need of some type of support, someone to talk to. It is nice not to have the worry of running out of cigs and going outside to smoke.
I am breathing easier already and smell much better. I do worry
about being strong and not giving in. I choose not to go with the gum or patch because it is hard to get off of that, and you still want and need the nicotine.

Try the nicotine patches. Be resolved........ they will really help you, but you will still experience the odd craving, which soon passes. Every week congratulate yourself on your cleverness, and give yourself a treat.

I haven't tried yet, but I know they don't recomend cold turkey. Different methods work for different people. Try checking out these websites:
