A criminologist is privately employed (by a university, for example) and studies trends in crime and criminality.

A Crime Scene Investigator / Technician is generally a sworn police officer employed by a governmental body and processes evidence found at crime scenes.

I think that they are both good careers, but don't become a crime scene investigator based on shows like "CSI" because that is NOTHING like what the real job is.
