your core is very weak. when the hip flexors are not strong enough to perform a proper sit-up the crunch is the best alternative's. what is happening is that the weaknesses in your abs and hip flexors are causing strain the various muscles of the lower back as they try to compensate for the abdominals.

your situation is very common. but you need to start focusing on training your core. weak abdominal muscles can cause some pretty painful back problems..
