This is a funny question... Don't you know how to interact with people?
Be friendly, be warm, be it your neighbour, or your colleague, or anybody you meet out there.
Stop worrying about the lifestyle. You don't need to think like that as if you have two choices and you are wondering which one to follow. This is life man and you are free to do waht you wanna do unless it is offensive to anybody. Go the way you wanna go, you feel like being friendly to them, do it. And if you don't feel like doing it, don't do it.
I personally prefer to maintain friendly relations with the people around me. Dunno about you.

They say for a clapping u need two hands.same is true in case of neighbours.It's an equal standard relation & ur behaviour towards ur neighbour should totaly depends on the way he/she behaves.try to be polite ,cooperative & friendly at starting & remain so if get a warm response from the other side ,if not so then be reserve , polite & helping there after.In either case do n
't raise ur expectations towards ur neighbour otherwise u will feel hurted.

we are very happy as single family life with our neighbours. we enjoing a good life every day with them in a village,i am on line in a village home

It is up to you. Just how friendly do you want to be? I keep an eye on their property when they are
gone. I keep track of which cars belong there. I also do not speak to them and they leave me alone.

i hope you should first learn as much as possible about them. only than you should get along with them case to case basis.you should be selfish with selfish ones and good with good ones.
