I would reccommend it highly.
For the skeptics, they might be just afraid of change, or had a bad experience because of their internet connection. My internet connection is solid, so it works very well. There are a lot of features that traditional phone service will never have. As for the power going out, this can happen, but i just put a cheap power backup system that I got at radio shack for like 30 bucks. It will keep the phones up for like 6 hours. Besides, if your power goes out, Vonage can automatically route your calls to another number, like a cell number. Lastly, the 911 isn't THAT different. Basically, since you can have a number anywhere in the world, you just have to fill out a profile that tells the 911 database where you are. The only difference is that the traditional phone companies fill this out for you since you can't take your service with you. Vonage is so excellent. Any skeptics either haven't used it or haven't used it on a solid internet connection.

Also if you loose power you have no phone line.
You don't have traditional 911 service like you do with your normal telephone line. People may say otherwise but if you look at there advertisements it says otherwise.
VOIP is not yet ready for residential use.

I don't have it but my boss does.
She loves it and swears by it.
She said it has brought her bill down over 50 percent and loves how it combines everything with her cable. Only downside is if your cable goes out so does your phone line,
If you have a cell phone this shouldn't be a problem.
