Everyone wants to feel special.
It doesn't matter that Jesus did not come during the time of someone's grandparents, great-great-grandparents, or even great-great-great-great-grandparents. Despite the incredibly long track record of no-shows--not to mention the fact that the Bible claims that no one would know the time--many Christians claim to know that Jesus is coming soon.
It's psychological. It is similar to someone losing at the slot machine. Okay, so the first $500 didn't win, but this next dollar is the big one. It WILL happen.
And when it doesn't, then the gambler believes that the NEXT dollar will be the big one. And so on.
So goes the life of the believer. He wants it to happen and will ignore centuries of inactivity in order to fuel that hope.

People in the past thought they were in the end times because they failed to consider ALL Biblical prophesies that spell out what must happen first. Your example of the 1940's is a prime one: during WWII, people thought the end was near, but they failed to understand that Israel had to be reborn as a nation FIRST, as per Ezekiel 36 and 37. This prophecy was fulfilled in 1948.
Currently, we are near to seeing fulfillment of Ezekiel 38 and 39, which foretells an invasion of Israel by Russia (Magog) and Iran (Persia), joined by neighboring Muslim nations. The prophecy tells us Russia will instigate the invasion and will provide protection, in the form of weapons, for the other participants.
The invasion is IMMINENT, since the U.S., England and Israel have all stated they plan to invade Iran soon; this will certainly prompt Russia, which has much to lose, to instigate a pre-emptive strike and invade Israel. Has it escaped your attention that lately Russia has been sending a HUGE amount of weapons to Iran and other Muslim nations? When this happens, then will you believe?

Because it is an effective way of pressuring people into joining Christianity.
It's the same as those advertisements that say, "One time sale. Hurry, this offer is only good through Sunday. Don't miss out on these great savings! This great deal will not be repeated."

God's Word makes it clear that Christ will soon return for His own. The witness of the Holy Spirit within the believer also confirms this truth. God's Word also mentions people such as yourself.......
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of His coming?... II Peter 3:3-4

Ah, Zhukov, it's not a fantasy. EVERY prophecy has been fulfilled to the letter. Revelation 22:12-"And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to His work."

Well, Christians keep telling everyone that Jesus is coming back soon, because he is. Why don't you wake up out of your fantasy world. I not here to convert anyone from non-believer to believer, but If you read the bible, you'll see why people believe that . Stop bashing people's religious beliefs. If you don't believe he's coming, that's your thing. Keep it to yourself.

If you think that all of us who believe that Jesus died for us and will return one day are crazy, then why do you care what we think. Why do you waste your time and precious consideration on people that are clearly nuts?
What if we are wrong? What if we are believing on something that is not true? What have we lost? Nothing. We have lived good lives, full of joy and hope of a Savior who loves us so much that he died for us. If we are wrong, we have lost nothing.
What if those who don't believe are wrong? What have they gained by not believing? Oh yea, eternity in Hell.
I think I'll take may chances believing that Jesus died for me and that he will return one day. I'm not saying he is coming back tomorrow or even in my lifetime, but he is coming back. He did die for us and he loves all of us - even those who do not believe.

People have been saying that for about the last 1,960 years. Remember that the bible says Jesus would be back before the generation that he had preached to died out.

If you think his body will come back then I will say it will never come back. But his teachings never left us and we could get to the salvation from his Devinne Sprit. I am not a christian but I believe all Great Saints have same agenda for this universe and that is to provide extreme peace which could not be affected from any situation
