A1 may be the first on the guide, but it's not the lightest shade. Either he or the assistant will check your shade based on what tint you are in, yellow, grey, reddish. Then you will go up or down on the guide. If you are whiter or brighter than an A1, you will probably be a B1 or D1 which are the bright white or grey white, or he may have to refer to a guide for the lighter shades of the composites or crown/bridge shade guides, which are A -1 or B0, B -1 Not the normal everyday shade, but much lighter which few people have, and we occasionally refer to especially for the incical edge which is very white, sometimes translucent. Ask your dentist he'll explain it and show you with the guides. Good luck!

You use "Bleach shades" which have been added to shade guides since the introduction of teeth bleaching. Maufacturers of dental composites have added bleach shades to their assortments over the past several years. The Bleach shades are separate from the tradional shades. Within the bleach range for composites you will find "Light" "Extra Light", etc. Within the traditional shade guide, try "B" shades first, they are actually more white than "A" shades. B1 is very white...
Keep in mind that a dentist has several options when creating a composite. He/she can mix colors, layer them making the incisal (edge) more translucent, mask imperfections, etc. (Re the answer below: telling someone that a dentist mixes colors is not disclosing professional secrets...)

A1 is a very light shade. You must have very, very white teeth. Bright white like a movie star, wow.
