Depends on where you live. In my town, it is a 3 dog limit, some are 4 and often not an issue if you live in rural areas.

There is a legal and a moral answer to this question.

The legal one depends on where you live in the world and the laws of that area.

Form a moral point of view, some people shouldn't have any because they are incapable of giving it the most basic of comforts, the smallest amount of affection and all the things that decent people do automatically.

I have a neighbour with two large dogs that hardly ever get walked, they spend most of the day in a pen and although i wouldn't go so far as to say they are mistreated it's just not much of a life for them.

Some people would be fine looking after 10 dogs, they would feed, walk and love them as they should be for an intelligent animal, it's just a shame that some owners are not quite as clever as the dogs.

Depends where you live Country, state, providence, or county. Then it depends on if you are in the city limits or country. Either way most places have ownership laws. Lots of people are not aware of them cause they are not enforced unless someone has a problem with you to begin with. Where I live in Minnesota USA in the county and city I lived in the rule was 3 animals period cat or dog. (if you dont live there then it can be diffrent) Any combination of 3 animals over 4 months of age. You could have as many puppies and kitties you wanted but they could only be under 4 months of age. The cats as well as dogs were required to all be licenced and full vaccinated. There was also a leash law in effect for the cats! If you lived outside city limits it was 5 animals and more than 5 adult animals required you get a licence to breed, even if you were breeding or not you still needed a licences for over 5 animals. So just call you local council or enforcment center and ask what the law is for pet ownership in your area. Even calling the Humane Society in your area, they should know the laws.
I lucked out though considering i was the head of Animal Control in my city for 9 years, hehe I had 6 dogs, 4 cats, 24 guinea pigs, and a assortment of various wildlife. I had a large home, a detached garage that was my animal rehab and a larged fenced in yard on a very understanding street full of wonderful neighbors. I was a responsible pet owner and no one complained, though I dont know if anything could have been done to me if they did. :)

Depends on where you live, some places you can only have two.

Stupid pet limit laws don't work anyway. The hoarders still hoard and the irresponsible owners with 1 dog are still irresponsible.

HOW UNFAIR! WHY didn't you fight to END the limit law then!!! Or is the law just for everyone ELSE!!!!! You are so much a better owner than *I* than it is ok for YOU to be over limit!!!!

If *I* lived in your city, and had AC seize MY dogs for being over limit, you can BET I would make SURE you did too!!!

In rural areas, how many dogs you keep is pretty much your own business, as long as the dogs aren't a nuisance. But many cities restrict residents to two or three dogs per household, not counting puppies less than a certain age, usually eight weeks to four months or so.

Well this isnt a straight forward answer as you will see....
If you are breeding then each council sets the agenda but in short that means no more than five breeding bitches in the control of you, now in control also means that if you manage a whelp then this is deemed in control and will be taken as part of the breeding scheme, this must of course be licensed through the council at a cost of about £68 per annum , this has to be certified by your vet etc ....apart from that there isnt really a restriction if you can control them and that you keep the area clean and the animals are all well cared for.

Just a half mile down my street is another township that only allows two dogs per household. This also includes outside dogs. There is no limit in my township. I get reported sometimes by people who want to know why I have seven dogs and they can only have two. You need to look up the local laws prior to buying dogs and houses.

Where I live we're allowed 6 dogs per household, though you'd have to be crazy to have that many, in my opinion.

What exactly do you mean? What type of household? Anyone? I have two dogs, and as a child i grew up with 3 dogs. My parents both have 2 dogs, and i have a friend with 5 dogs. My motherinlaw doesnt have any dogs. Neither do my nextdoor neighbours. My brother doesnt have a dog either. My Aunt has 2 dogs and my grandad had 3 dogs.

Any help??????

Good question. I guess it would depend on where you live. Inside city limits or outside. In a housing development or not.
I have 5 dogs and live outside city limits. I have heard of having to have a kennel license after so many dogs, how many I don't know.
