I think most Catholics and nonCatholic Christians would agree that you cannot earn salvation by "works" or rituals - it is something given by God
but then I have understood that we must continue to "work out" our salvation all through life - I guess this "working out" is different from works but I dont know how or what that exactly that means

for a Biblical reference:
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." Phil. 2:12

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

You are right, if you look at the New Testament in context, it repeatedly says that our salvation cannot be earned, it is by grace we are saved. The other message given in context is that we must persevere, and press on toward the goal. If we have to persevere, that means we will meet resistance. That is what is meant by working out your salvation. Protect the truth don't exchange it for a lie.

You "work out" your own salvation by living, learning, and finding your own answers and solutions (WIth God's help and the support of family, friends, and other Christians, and Faith) to how to better yourself and apply the principles and guidelines of the Bible to your life. Growth is a process and so is salvation. Perfection doesn't come overnite but we can all strive for it right?

After that, in order to live a fulfilling christian life, it is best to:
Study the word.
Fellowship with other christians, both inside and outside of the church.
Join a bilble study.
Fellowship with God, by reading His word (the Bible) and praying.

Rick Warren, in "Purpose-Driven Life", says that it is in fact comparable to working out at a gym. You do that to get physical exercise and get more fit.
We work out our salvation similarly. We seek to make ourselves spiritually stronger. It is not a matter of doing things to earn salvation. I am glad you know that we cannot do that.

to work out our own salvation? it's very easy, surrender the serpent seed by repentance and receive the righteous seed of the Holy Father by using your freedom of choice and then go through the process of maturity untill you overcome all things including the serpent seed, the human will. Then the will of the Holy Father will be only your focus and will then Revelation 21:7 will be fulfilled: 'He that overcometh shall inherit all things, and i will be his God and he will be my son.'

I believe it is by they grace of God and the atonement of Christ that you are saved, but ONLY after we have done all we can do. In other words we all fall short of earning the right to go back and live with God and Christ's atonement (paying for our sins) overcomes death and allows us to repent. If we, however do not take advantage of the gift that is offered us and don't do good works, then the grace that is offered us to forgive us of our sins will be of no effect and we will have to pay for our own sins.

James 2: 14, 17-18, 20-22, 24-26
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
• • •
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
• • •
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
• • •
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

They simply do so by staying in and being obedient to the Word and walking in the light that comes our way. The Bible tells us to be holy, which is possible, in spite of what is said by others to the contrary.
