My son has been picking his finger right by his fingernail and it is red and the skin is pealing. Yesterday it looked yellow and had pus on it.I put bacitracin on it and a bandaid. The pus is gone today, but it's still red and the skin is peeling. Should I take him to the dr or do these things get better on their own?

I would not take my boys in for this. It will go away in time. If the finger turns black or looks like it is going blue then this would be a concern. Sounds like a hang nail to me....

Whenever the skin looks puffed, red, cracking,or has puss,go to the dr.It could be an infected hang nail or possibly eczema. Most people get eczema in the winter. Our skin is dry from being inside and we itch til we bleed, then,we get the source infected.Sometimes, picking near the nails is a nervous habit. The dr. will let you know.

It could become serious--it's called a finger felon. You could have him soak it in some warm to hot water with salt of Epsom salts to draw out the infection. Don't mess with it though if it continues to grow and throb. It can lead to blood poisoning. So don't hesitate to call the doctor.

Since the hands are into everything they are more likely to get infected and re infected, so I would go see your doctor so he can make sure the infection has not gone under the nail.

The pus makes me say yes. If it is painful I would take him for sure. Good luck!
