I think this is one of the most ridiculous questions I have ever seen on Y!A. This person prayed that the Colts would win and she and some who answered the question think god answered their prayers.
This is just one of the MANY reasons I am an atheist. Believers...if your god is so powerful and such a loving god, then why would he answer a prayer like that and yet turn away from all the people who are suffering from abuses, illnesses, starvation, etc? If he is so loving wouldn't he answer the prayers of those who really and truly need help?

Today- This particular question is not one of the many reasons I am an atheist...it is the rational BEHIND that question.

It's not ridiculous at all... perhaps the people who are suffering from abuses. illnesses starvation etc. aren't praying... your statement is illogical because you don't understand what you are talking about.
Incidentally, that's why I'm not an Atheist... because I like to think for myself instead of listening to popular opinion

People will believe what they want to. If they want to believe God had something to do with it there's no way of changing their minds but God does have better things to do. If Christians listen more to the calling of God to help others there would be less starvation and misery in the world. Too bad most are just too busy thinking of themselves. You should read the Bible and do some studies and really make a decision for yourself, as a Christian you might be able to show others how it should be done.
A very disappointed Christian.

It's as when a base ball player comes up to bat, and makes the sign of the cross so that his God will give him a home run. The pitcher does the same so that his God lets him strike out the batter. Why would God favor one over the other ?
The German soldiers, in the Second World War wore buckles that were imprinted with Gott mit uns. God wasn't with them.
The poor starving people are the prayingest, church goingest people on earth. God seems to favor the rich, who if they go to church at all, it's only for appearances.

When armies go into battle they ask the chaplin to pray for their safety and for a victory. When a high school football game begins they begin with a prayer. So does God pick a side and do our prayers effect the outcome of games, wars, or even gambling?
The answer is that there is no such thing as a wasted prayer. every prayer counts. Not that it will invoke God to pick our side, but that we are changed so that we can deal with the outcome.
Who we are, the essence of our being, is a product of every thing we do, every word we speak, and every thought that enters our minds. Therefore, we seek truth, practice love and relish everything in this world that is beautiful.
While you may disagree with a person's reason for the prayer, there is no disagreement with the act itself.

Grow up. Being an atheist doesn't make you special or unique. Do research before you speak on a subject such as Christianity, which you have NO knowledge about. You ask why in this question. Open your mind and look for the answer before judging. You will find your answer in the bible if you look for it. I think you are old enough to find out why we have suffering if you are old enough to think you are atheist. And just to give you a head start, God answers all prayers, just not always in the way we want them answered. He has his reasons and they are always right. Good luck finding what you are seeking, because from the tone of your question you are indeed seeking.

Well, I don't care for football (I'm a baseball fan), but I do know that you're supposed to turn all your cares and worries over to God. That doesn't mean that the answer will always be yes, though. Too many people pray for things that would be bad for them. I, personally, have never prayed that my team will win, but I don't think that it is necessarily wrong. The person who prayed that their team would win most likely also prayed for the welfare and salvation for those who were suffering, too. I know that when I pray, first I thank God for all the good things he does, I pray for my friends and family, AND those people I don't know personally that are suffering. God is loving, and does care about those people. That is why he has put it into our hearts to set up charities, outreaches, and foundations to help those in need.

the reason y god has 'turned away' from millions who are suffefing is because these millions are not turned towards god the way they should be

Holy Koran stated that Allah The Almighty will give good thing and bad thing for all the living things in this world whether Muslims, Christians, Atheis or else. Including the flora and fauna. It is nature for human to always seek perfection and always blame God if they don't have it. It is a test for Muslims whether we been patience and thankfullness and a measurement of 'qualification' to Heaven for eternity.

Do you always go out of your way to find the negitive? So what, someone's happy because her team won. Big deal! All you can see is what hasn't been done yet. Y'know what, you do something! Instead of complaining that Christians aren't praying hard enough for the starving or the ill or the abused, you go out and you do something and stop sitting back and complaining. It's easy to point the finger when you're doing nothing, but to put your money where your mouth is is harder.
And for the record, I volunteer and help with charities in my area.

Unfortunately, I think the question represents what far too many people believe. The idea that there is some kind of all powerful Santa Claus who is praised when he answers your prayers is bad enough. The reluctance of the cultists (Christian and others) to blame their god for ignoring other prayers speaks to willful ignorance.
