actually the basis for Christianity is Christ not the bible. I am a christian, however I realize the bible was written by man therefore fallable. It is more of a historical document of that time period, and I believe it to be more metaphorical than anything.
I don't know about the authors actually lying, but I do think they put their own spin on things, that is just human nature. Ex: you hear a story on the news, then you repeat the story to your friend. Its not typically word for word from what the newscaster said, right? Then you take into account what the newscaster heard and what they repeated. Thats why hearsay is not admissable in court.

The New Testament was written between 40 and 80 AD.
If they did make it up, why would they have martyred themselves over a known lie? And why did they set up Christianity to be so vulnerable? Paul the apostle said that if the ressurection didn't happen then all of this is a lie. All someone had to do, was produce the corpse of Jesus and Christianity would have been history.

Actually, the first Gospel was written within 30 years of the Crucifixion. And plenty of people could testify to its truth at the time. Christians today simply don't put much time or effort into proving the obvious. If disbelievers wish to continue in their ignorance, we have learned that there isn't really that much we can do about it. So we occasionally correct you. But mostly, we just let you believe what you intend to believe.

Why not ask the One who inspired the entire book.
I don't believe that any of the Bible is wrong, a lie, or misinterpreted. As it is written, is how it happened.
By the way, Matthew was one of the original twelve.

I really liked the answer given by "crissy"
I would like to believe those writing the bible were not lying, maybe embellishing and certainly those with the power at the time added bias. Faith is the key, choose love/fellowship and have the greatest desire to go back home to father and that is where you shall go. If you choose dominion/evil/controling others
its off to the other place with you.

Gee! You are full of good information.
Matthew was written by a disciple of Jesus.
Mark was written by John Mark a young man at the time of Jesus and a member of a family very close to Jesus.
Luke and Acts was written by Luke a physician of Paul, who did not write his gospel until he had conferred with those who lived with Jesus.
John and the letters of John were written by John and was a disciple of Jesus.
James was written by a half-brother of Jesus.
The letters of Peter were written by Peter who was a disciple of Jesus.
Jude was written by a half-brother of Jesus.
Hebrews is of uncertain origin but many believe it was written by Apollos, a fellow Christian and friend of Paul.
The rest of the letters were written by the Apostle Paul, and are clearly identified as being written by Paul, and have consistent characteristics with each other.

It's possible... but not probable... the Bible has been authenticated and scientifically validated to be truthful.
