We have two boxes / outlets along a wall - one with an electrical outlet and one with a phone jack. I'd like to combine the two into one double box - is this allowed?

you can if you want to.

What will most likely happen is you will have a loud hum on your line. When you run telephone cable parallel to lights or electrical wiring you will experience this.

Is it allowed I think it is against some of the electrical codes or housing codes. As long as your not lookin to sell your house and you can put up with the noise then go for it. Other wise Id suggest you leave it the way it is.

Its not allowed by any local building codes or the National Electrical code. The insulation on telephone wire is not rated to protect against the voltages surges which occur on the AC power lines from time to time.

Keep them seperate!
You can't mix them and even if you could, the line voltage might interfere with your phone reception.
