Softening Rock-Solid Brown Sugar

How do you soften brown sugar that is as hard as concrete? Before it reaches the concrete stage, but when you notice signs of hardening, place an apple slice in the bag and leave it for a couple of days.

After the sugar is hard, you can soften it by placing a cup of sugar in a covered dish in the microwave and heating for 30 seconds or so. You may need to heat it more than once, but watch to see that it doesn’t start to melt. You can also heat the brown sugar on a metal pan in a regular oven at 250°F (120°C) for five minutes or so.

To keep it from hardening in the first place, store it in the freezer.

Toss it in the microwave for 15 seconds or so. To avoid this next time, put it in an airtight jar with a slice of bread. The bread will absorb the moisture and keep the brown sugar dry and crumbly.

Yes, that will work, but if you are using it for cooking anyway, it will melt when heat is applied during cooking. Make sure you keep it closed extremely tight after opening next time. It will keep soft up to 6 months or more if stored properly. May want to put it in a storage container instead of the original bag or box you bought it in for easier and better results if you don't use it often.

You can microwave it for a few seconds at a time, just keep checking on it. There are discs that you can buy to place into the sugar to keep it from getting hard, they look like material from a clay pot. I spent $6.00 for one thinking it would work, don't waste your money-it doesn't work.

you can plop it on a cookie sheet and run it in a warm (not hot) oven maybe at like 200 degrees for a couple minutes until it crumbles. You could place it in a zip-top bag with a slice of bread as well.

Put a slice of bread in the bag with it. I can tell you from experience that the sugar will defintely get soft! I did it one night and in the morning -- presto chango! :-)
