You should eat a couple of hours before working out; like fruits, so you'll have that glucose in your body by the time you start working out--this will allow you to replenish your energy stores once you start working out.
You should eat protein after you workouts; you body needs protein to help with muscle protein synthesis and to help the body recover.
Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water before and after your workouts.
Good luck and train hard.

Part of it depends on how much you eat and your own body's reaction to the intensity of exercise. I've had coffee and eaten a banana half hour before running and never had a problem. Eating a meal was another thing, even 2 hours before running if it was a good-sized meal.
So according to my body, a small snack was okay half hour before, but the sooner you eat after intense exercise, the better. Reason is, you need to replace your lost energy in the muscles.
