It is a good idea to take it away early on.. And that is exactly what you should do.. Just take it away and don't give it back.. It will be hard for a few days, but in the end it will be worth it.. Good luck to you

Since you didn't provide any info as to why you'd want to wean so very early, I am assuming it's just because? If it's not for a medical issue or the fact that you have to wean then don't. There's zero reason to wean that early. A Pacifier is a comfort and shouldn't even be given to a baby till around 2 months so assuming you followed that rule of thumb your baby has only had it a couple months as is and you already want to take it away? Consider the pacifier like a wooby...to take it away once a baby has gotten used to it/loves it it not right. A baby wouldn't know what a pacifier is unless a guardian gave it to them and now that you have your baby in a way needs it for comfort. You have many many months till you need to think about taking it away. I was lucky and able to get my son off his after he got a really bad flu recently where he was unable to use the pacifier anyhow due to the massive congestion. After over a week of having the flue and not using the pacifier he no longer even looked for it so we stored it away in his keepsake box. Colds/flu's while awful to see your child have and deal with are also excellent times to take the pacifier out of the picture, but not at just 4 months. Let your baby indulge for a much longer time with it. Will keep your nights less stressful as having the pacifier with your baby in the crib can be an automatic calmifier.

Why would you want to?
4 months is very young to wean a baby off a pacifier or let cry for any reason. They are still getting used to the world around then and need security.
My son weaned around 8 months when he started to get teeth. Some babies need it more then but others don't. If you are concerned about the babies dependency it's a little early to worry. Pacifiers and bottles are fine for the first year after that a child shouldn't be using either of them but remember all children develop differently. If you have concerns about dental health ask a Ped. Dentist and they can give you tips on early dental care. Hope this helps.

4 months is still young. Is there a need to ween off the pacifier yet? I think a pacifier is for comfort & soothing the baby. If it works for the baby I say let the baby be a baby. Worry about it when its 1. You dont want to see a toddler running around w/ a paci, but a baby--its ok! Actually Dr.'s have proven that a pacifier helps to prevent SIDS, & they are now encouraging the use of them. It regulates consistent breathing.--If that is not reason enough!

That's going to be very difficult to do since your baby is prolly teething. You might want to wait a little longer because i'm sure he/she will be very fussy without it. It's more of a soother right now. I started taking the pacifier away from my son when he was a yr, the same as the bottle. By that time he's already walking or crawling and pulling up and interested in other things so their more distracted by this point, much easier to wean.

I think 4 months is too early to take your baby off of the pacifier.

I took the pacifier away from all four of my children at the age of 4 months too! I just went cold turkey. Threw all pacifiers away and it was only hard for a couple of days. It's worth it because you won't have to worry about it later on in life when it'll become more difficult to get away. Stay strong and good luck!

find another way to soothe the baby, such as cuddling or singing. My son gave up his pacifier on his own when he was 11 mos and my daughter never really liked one at all. At 4 mo there is nothing wrong with a pacifier. I think one is a good age to get rid of it. My half-brother is about to turn 4 and still walks around with one, utterly disgusting and ridiculous!!!

You don't need to ween a 4 month old off of a pacifier. We weened both of our boys off a little after their first birthday. A pacifier helps provide comfort for your baby, and unless its hurting him/her, why change? Talk to your pediatrician, and he'll probably tell you the same thing.

Why would you need to do that when the child is only 4 mo old? Its not hurting the baby, some babies need it until they are about 2 yrs old. There is no reason at all to take it away now.
