one of the effects of extended colds, especially in young children and older folk, is the thinning of the mucous membrane that protects the inside of the nose. This will make the skin on the inside of the nose crack and mini nose bleeds may cause clots in the nostrils and a strong sneeze will dislodge the clots. The increased bleeding is from the skin tear that results in the clot being blown out of the nose. Be careful of long durations of cold weather, this will cause the same effect [extended exposure to cold air and think membranes in the nostrils].
