Can they be played by either male OR females?

ALL theatre can be played by male or female characters. But if you want to be politically correct, i suggest you read the script and see if it has any implications to whether the character is male or female.

they are males bc in some books they wear suits ( wow i don't know how I remember this ) but yeah they can be played by anyone... I mean assuming you aren';t producing this on lik ebroadway.... its fine becuase htey never do anything disticntly male or female they are just friends

In the books and in the musical production they refer to each other as males.
