Spoken like a true outsider. I attended Catholic schools, both elementary and high school, and the holy women who taught us were honored and respected, but certainly not feared. You see, these are teachers who are not in the profession for the money of for the short working day or long vacations or early retirement. They are in education only because of true concern and love for children. In that respect they are ideal teachers. My own children were also taught by religious sisters, and now that they are long graduated they still keep in touch with some of those beloved teachers who helped them grow not only intellectually but spiritually. I don't know where you are getting your misinformation, but you would do well to check with some people who are actually involved in Catholic education before making ridiculous blanket statements.

you have a very old view of nuns. I was taught by nuns the one year I went to Catholic school and I'm good friends with several nuns at my church. Since being a nun is now a calling, where as in the olden days it was one of two choices for a girl (marriage or nunhood) women are more happier in their choice. After all, if you were forced into being a priest, you wouldn't be happy and take your anger out on people. But if you chose to be a priest and that's what you wanted, then you'd be happier in your life's work.

And none of the nuns I've ever met have ever used the ruler.
