Against the Japanese, the Battle of Midway was the turning point in the war. After sinking 2/3rds of the Japanese Aircraft Carriers in a single battle, it was just a long campaign of island hopping that the Japanese Navy was never going to be able to stop. In fact, they couldn't even support most of their islands with naval forces, because of the probability of loss to American Pilots.
As to Europe, the turning point (equally important to Midway) was the Battle of the Bulge. Bulge was the last offensive Germany was able to mount and came very close to breaking Allied lines and pushing them back to the sea. The loss of the Battle of the Bulge, however, signalled the last real chance germany had against the allies and from there on out it was a slow but innevitable journey to Berlin.

There were bigger battles the battle of leyte gulf for example. The Battle of Midway's significance was that the Japanese naval airarm was destroyed in this battle along with the 4 carriers that were the back bone of the Japanese fleet. There would be more pilots and carriers but they would never be as potent a force as the one at Midway. From then on the Americans ruled the Pacific ocean.

Remember first, WW2 was fought in Europe, as well as the pacific. The turning point in the war with Japan is hard to pinpoint. The battle at Guadalcanal was the first offensive action against Japan, and was "a" turning point. Of course, Iwo Jima could also be considered a turning point. The battle at Midway was indeed a crucial battle, and could also have been a turning point.

As battles themselves, in the pacific theater, go, then the battle of bouganville was a more definitive victory. I see Midway as much luck as strategy.
