1. Get back to Nature, wilderness, go someplace new and beautiful I've never seen before.
2. Change things up a bit, roughing it, away from TV, Internet, people
3. Get some exercise, accomplish something slightly difficult
4. I enjoy writing about the trip afterwards online in my blog and posting amazing photos for family and friends to drool over.
5. I love to plan, prepare, buy and try out new gear, and try new food/meal/activity ideas, to get the most fun for the lowest price too.

It was my job until very recently...therapeutic wilderness camp, so a lot of my reasons were job related, money, working with the kids, etc.

But my own adventures have been about:

Trees, gosh I love the sun coming through the trees.

Hammocks, one of my only true stress relievers

Quiet! I live by a pretty busy road and my apartment is kind of noisy.

Animals, their sounds, their ways, their snuffling around.

Different sense of time: patience, unhurried, no schedule except for more nature's and internal clock. It helps me HEAR what my body and my spirit are trying to tell me.

Oh yeah, and campfires. An essential part of any camping trip for me.

I will admit that I'm not too fond of dealing with adversity or challenge out there, I just like the calm. But there is a sense of pride in knowing you can be content with very very few material items. And if it isn't too severe, I like being a part of changing weather...waking up in a warm sleeping bag on a chilly morning...not wanting to get out, not having to get out.

#1 Just a basic love for getting away from everyday stuff
#2 I think there's something in all of us that nudges at us reminding us that we NEED to know basic survival skills such and building fires and catching fish and other wild game.
#3 No TV's (or portable dvd players) at least not at MY camps
# Actually wanting to wake up in the morning - no alarm clock needed.
#5 Being close to nature and actually hearing animals move in their natural habitat in the peace and quiet of a night out doors (no zoo can provide this)

I have to add this one.........ya never know if you might get to get real proof that sasquatch reallly exists. lol!!!!

My family and I were recently hit quite hard with the ice storm that hit SW missouri. The entire region was out of power.
I'm gratefull that my family took me on rugged camping trips. It served me well to know how to set up klondike camp for my family. My husband still had to work and so it was up to this Missouri Mama to keep the kids warm and fed. We did this for a week. No frostbite, no hungry bellys, and tons of great stories told by the fire. We did, however, have a 154 year old cabin to stay in that is owned by the historical society, but 4 degree temps blowing up from the the floor and into every crack between the wood sure kept me outdoors with my hatchet quite a bit.
I might have broken a few nails and had to do other un-lady like things, but we're back at home now with alot better stories than those who simply bought generators.
I guess i'd have to say that the best reason for camping is to sharpen survival skills and to teach our young how to survive.
I have 4 sons, so I feel a great resonsability to show them the things they need to know and how to put their brains to work in times of crisis.
Generators.........ha ha ha!!!
