I quit smoking three weeks ago using the NRT for a week then cold turkey. I have only had a small headache that lasted for about three days during the first week. Aside from that, I have had no withdrawals that I have read about other people suffering through. I had smoked a pack to 1 1/2 a day for 33 years. So will the withdrawals evenly kick in or what??????

NRT is Nicotene replacement therapy also known as the "patch".

Wow! Consider yourself blessed! That's great! If you don't have withdrawal symptoms the main part you have to watch out for is the habit part of it. Hopefully you will sneak by with no big withdrawals. But beware................attacks can sneak up on you any time. It has been 15 years since I quit smoking, and although I have had no cravings or desires to smoke for many years now, I still know that if I take that one cigarette I will be right back on them. It is an addiction..............and a very powerful one.

Congratulations on quiting! I'm proud of you! =)

Congrats! I did the same thing and I was smoking 2-3 packs a day. I used the patch for about 4 days, smoked 1 cigarette on the fourth day, coughed and hacked a bit and said no more. It's been several weeks now and I'm not craving them really, don't think I really ever did. I'll catch myself going to go have one, or taking a break, before it dawns on me that I'm not smoking anymore. I've never allowed smoking in my house, hate the smell, so that helps. It's funny but my kids smoke, you would think it would be harder, but knowing the cigarettes are right there doesn't bother me. I keep a can of febreeze handy to knock the stink off of them when they come in! Now I won't say this in my first time quitting, it's not even my second or third time. I keep saying one day it will stick. My down fall is I'll get mad over something, or will just have "one", telling myself 10 or so later, that I'll quit again tomorrow. That "one" is all it takes, even though it stinks, I can't breath, and don't smoke in my house, and literally hate all things about smoking, but I've done it for over 30 years. Sometimes I think it's like what they say in the stop smoking pamphlet, you think they are your best friends. Well, sometimes your best friends are your worst enemies too. Keep up the good work, make it stick for you! I plan to do that this time too. Watch out for that "ONE" don't let it happen to you!

My symptoms were in the first 3 days. I quit cold turkey. But, about the 30 day mark, they come back with a vengence. I did it though. Dec 1 was a year!!! Good luck, most effects are just the craving that can hit at any time. I still have to limit my time around smoker/s

Congratulations for quitting! You're through the hardest part you non-smoker, you.

It sounds to me like you've got the physical withdrawal beat. From my own experience & everything I've ever heard, the withdrawal is the worst the first 1-3 days, then gradually better. Maybe you didn't identify the symptoms as such. Anyway, I think you're in the clear.

Well done

You might eventually get with-drawl systems, but I would imagine that you are over the worst part. I was a smoker for 35 years and have now been nicotine free for 3 years, having gone cold turkey. Every once in a while I will get some sort of a craving, but I just think of it as my body still healing after having been a smoker for so many years. But, just remember, it is a life long addiction and do not let your guard down even once. Good luck.

Withdrawal refers to the time in which your body is physically reacting to the sudden or gradual lack of nicotine. This direct physiological reaction will only last while you body is adjusting to that chemical change, not for three years. You were probably able to self-medicate your depression with the nicotine when you smoked. (Nicotine can assist synapse function) Now you may want to seek out healthier, more affective treatment.
