We live in the States but are planning on marrying in Africa. Problem is I'm worried about our finances. Although we both work and together earn a decent income, I'm thinking maybe we should consolidate our credit bills first, pay them off and sort of, have a fresh start. Or should we get a loan to help with our wedding expenses? We're also saving and the families will pitch in but we would like some financial advice that will leave us with a peace of mind, any ideas?

As someone who recently got married, you want to come out of your wedding owing *as little money as possible*. The wedding only lasts one day, and it'll be fun and you'll remember it so it's okay to spend a lot of money, but the debt will haunt you for a long time.

You should really try to consolidate and pay off your bills first, then try your best not to borrow anything for the wedding. It's just not worth the stress and headache that comes with big credit card bills.

Money is the #1 cause of conflict in a marriage.

Are you from Africa originally, or do you have family there? In not, perhaps you could get married in the states-or wherever home is now- to save money, and make a trip to Africa on your 5th Anniversary, or at some future point. Getting a loan for a wedding never made much sense to me (personally) since it's one day's celebration. So understated always appealed to me more- especially if finances are tight. I just couldn't enjoy the day know we (the married couple) or parents (mine or his) were stretched tight paying for basically just a party. Your love and committment is the big thing, not a fancy dress and shin dig. So maybe re-assessing your wedding plans is the first order of the day.

If you have credit card debt already, PLEASE do not create any more debt with a wedding. You can have a beautiful wedding in the US for little money. Six months into the marriage you will be happy not to have any extra debt. When you've saved up some money take a second honeymoon there:-).
