Launch Windows Media Player,/Click on "Help" tab/choose "About Widows Media Player - check the version and it will tell you. It will look something like 9.00.00.3349 - which means in this instance the that the system is running version 9 (with a few updates - hence the .oo.3349)
Hope this helps!

Well, this is really a thick idea, but different. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. You can know your Windows Media Player version from the list in there.
