One that's well cared-for and kept clean by bathing rather than being allowed to wallow in the nearest pile of foxes shite!

Any dog that isn't groomed properly has the potential to have an offensive odor, but some dogs do seem to be more problematic than others. For instance, dogs that have a dense coat and/or undercoat for protection against the elements are going to present more of a challenge in this area (e.g., I have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, a breed that is often used by hunters of water fowl -- the oils in their skin can cause them to become quite odorific if they're not bathed frequently). I'd recommend a breed that has hair vs. fur -- a poodle is a great choice because you can go as small (toy) or as large (standard) as you'd like. I also own a Chihuahua -- although short-haired, she's still a dog and is going to need to be bathed on occasion. The nice thing about her is she's small enough to stick right in the kitchen sink -- no backbreaking effort required. Hope this helps.

A dog that is groomed regularly.

My service dog jumps in the shower with me every morning. He just likes to feel the water on him but it keeps the hair down and he never smells bad. I like to spray his coat with a diluted (3-4 drops of tea tree oil into a liter of water) after his shower. It keeps him from smelling like a wet dog all the time. I have never had a complaint and he is in public all the time.

None of the dogs I've owned have been smelly.

This is due to a good diet, proper exercise, regular grooming and the very rare bath when they have rolled in something smelly.

In other words proper care.

However dogs smell like dogs;cats smell like cats; chickens smell like chickens and humans smell like humans.

If you don't like the normal smell of a well-cared for dog then perhaps you should have a re-think?

Chihuahuas and other short-haired dogs don't usually smell as bad as other long-haired dogs. You should bathe them regularly, though, otherwise the oil from your hands (after petting them) and such will make them start to smell a little. If you get a chihuahua or something like that, I would suggest also buying dog shampoo that has added conditioners to prevent itchy or flaky skin.

a dog that has a bath every week :)

if you live in a warm climate, like the south or mid-west or southwest, your dog will sweat when it's hot, so be sure to bathe it when it's warm outside. other than that, there's nothing you can do about the smell short of de-odorizing the carpet before you vacuum with a baking soda carpet de-odorizer like Arm And Hammer. don't let it sleep in your bed, either! the hair will get in your face and it will make your sheets stink and you'll have to wash them every 3 days to be comfy while you sleep.

One of the most important things if you have a smelly dog is actually to change their bedding more often.Seriously,my dog can stink,he has smelly feet!!(Eeew). Change her bedding once a week,it really does make a difference (especially to the smell in your house!)

Dogs that live outside smell more than those living inside

But any dog washed and groomed regularly wont smell that bad

I think Akita's are supposed to be really clean, they lick themselves a lot and are almost as clean as cats.

generally most dogs do not smell if they are cared for properly, what I mean is if they are fed a high quality kibble and are groomed on a regular basis. The dogs with odors are usually those with skin issues or ones who are not groomed on a regular basis.
